*Hospital como idea general. No se usa the.
John tuvo un accidente.
Tuvo que ir al hospital.=>He had to go to hospital
Todavía está hospitalizada ahora.=> He is still in hospital.
Hospital como edificio concreto. Sí se usa the
Jenny fue al hospital a visitarlo.=> Jenny went to the hospital to visit him. (Go to)
Ella está en el hospital ahora.=>She is at the hospital now. (Be at)
* Prison school university college church
Se dice que un delincuente goes to prison ( no to the prison)
Se dice que un niño goes to school ( no to the school)
-No se usa the cuando pensamos en la idea de para lo que sirven estos lugares.
Cuando deje la escuela, quiero ir a la universidad ( ser estudiante )
When I live school I want to go to university.
¿Por qué los niños no están en la escuela hoy? ( son alumnos )
Why aren’ t the children at school today?
Ana va a la iglesia todos los domingos. Anne goes to church every Sunday.
El hermano de Tom está en la cárcel por robo. Tom’s brother is in prison for robbery.

Sí se puede usar aquí :
